How to Convert Inches to Feet

There are exactly 12 inches in one foot, so converting inches to feet is a single division: divide the number of inches by 12. The relationship is exact by definition — the international inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres and the foot as exactly 12 inches, so no rounding is involved in the factor itself.
The formula
feet = inches ÷ 12
Worked examples
- 72 inches ÷ 12 = 6 feet
- 36 inches ÷ 12 = 3 feet
- 18 inches ÷ 12 = 1.5 feet, which is 1 foot 6 inches
- 100 inches ÷ 12 = 8.333333 feet, which is 8 feet 4 inches
Converting to feet and inches
Everyday US measurements are usually written as feet plus leftover inches rather than as a decimal. Take the whole number of feet, then multiply the decimal remainder by 12 to get the inches. For 100 inches: 100 ÷ 12 = 8.3333, the whole part is 8 feet, and 0.3333 × 12 = 4 inches, giving 8 feet 4 inches.

Going the other way
To convert feet back into inches, multiply by 12. Six feet is 6 × 12 = 72 inches. Because 12 is an exact factor, converting in either direction is lossless.
