How Many Inches Are in a Foot?

Last updated February 14, 2026 · Length

There are exactly 12 inches in one foot. This is a definition rather than a measurement, so the relationship is exact: 1 ft = 12 in, and 1 in = 1/12 ft ≈ 0.0833333 ft.

Where the number comes from

Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres and the foot as exactly 0.3048 metres. Dividing 0.3048 by 0.0254 gives exactly 12, which is why the ratio never needs rounding.
